About OCPJ

OCPJ's Mission is to educate and act locally in order to recruit and organize others into a citizens' movement with the sustained political power to construct a world of peace with social and economic justice.  Our geographic home is Oxford, Ohio (the home of Miami University). We network with others actively working to effect positive change at local, state, national, and global scales.

STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

We believe that people, thinking imaginatively,
Can ensure the continuity of life on our planet.
We affirm our world citizenship, our community roots,
And our loyalty to each other and our common future.

  • We believe in a national foreign policy that is built upon the foundation of peaceful and equitable resolutions of conflict, nonintervention, and respect for the right of self-determination. As citizens, we recognize and affirm the role of the people in building these relationships. When abuses of human rights require intervention, we believe this should be the role, not of individual states, but of a radically transformed, genuinely independent and democratic United Nations.

  • We are convinced that real security is based on real justice. We call for a halt to the buildup of conventional and nuclear weapons by nation-states and international alliances. With genuine arms reduction a much greater portion of the world's resources could be channeled toward meeting human needs.

  • We believe that equitable relations among people and nations are firmly rooted in economic justice. -- that meeting basic, common human needs is an essential foundation for a new economic world order.

  • We are committed to the protection and extension of human rights. Minimally, the term human rights includes democratic participation in the decisions that affect our lives, with freedom from discrimination based on race, religion, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or political beliefs-- freedom from fear of physical, sexual, or economic violence.

  • We realize that we are living on a planet with finite interconnected resources. All human planning and activity should take sustainability into account and recognize the importance of preserving soils, air, water, and the diversity of organisms.

We, therefore, accept the responsibility to educate and act locally, encouraging people to make use of their potential for the achievement of peace in the world, with social and economic justice.
