Our History
 
 

The Oxford Citizens for Peace was formed in 1979 in response to the growing dangers of the nuclear arms race between the U.S. and the former Soviet Union, and the heightened tensions of the Cold War. As a local grassroots organization, we worked in coalition with many other peace groups throughout the state and the country as part of the FREEZE (the Nuclear Arms Race) movement. And yes, we jump-started the formation of Students for Peace & Justice at Miami University, and continue to work with the group. In 1984, we opened the Peace Center as an educational resource center and by 1990 set up a formal set of principles and by-laws for our operation, established a Board of Directors, and collected dues for membership. Our mission has broadened over the years and by 1990, we expanded to our current name, Oxford Citizens for Peace and Justice, in response to the conflict in Central America and our merger with the Central America Peace Coalition.
